Travel Guide

There are many ways to travel to and within Finland. We'd like to share some advice and information and encourage you to ask many questions. The more you ask, the more we can add later on this page to support you.

The Venue & Location

Nyynäisten Wintti

First and foremost: Yes, there will be a pronounciation contest for all non-Finnish guests! :)

Jokes aside, we will celebrate with you close to where Ella grew up, roughly 25 min away from Turku City Center.

Below we will share different options on how to get there, where to stay and suggestions to connect your visit to more exciting destinations in Finland and the Nordics.

Transportation

Flights

There are two options we recommend:

1) Flying to Helsinki
Helsinki Airport is the biggest gateway to Finland with many direct connections to European Capitals. From Germany, Finnair and Lufthansa offer daily flights from Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich.

Travel Options from Helsinki Airport to Turku you will find in the other categories.

2) Flying to Turku
One Option, the two of us can recommend if you do not have much time available is travelling with airbaltic via Riga to Turku Airport. We have travelled with the connecting flights from Frankfurt and Munich and mainly had positive experiences.

Driving

Driving to Finland (from Germany) can be done via different routes including one or multiple ferries (see next category).

To assess tolls and charges we recommend using the ADAC Route Planner.
Most recommended routes lead via Denmark (incl. ferry ride) to Stockholm to Turku via ferry.

A short guide and other useful information you can find here on VisitFinland.

Ferries

When going to Finland with a car or exploring Finland with archipelagos and many lakes, you will not come around taking a ferry.

From Travemünde, Germany, there is a direct ferry connection to Finland operated by "Finnlines" (travel time ~30 hours). We will try this option in December.

Other options are ferries from Tallinn or Stockholm mainly operated by Tallink/ Silja Line or Viking Line. In our day trip/ travel suggestions you will find options to use the ferry offering.

Train & Public Transport

The Train Network & Public Transport are very easy to use and affordable in Finland.
The national carrier offering inter city connections (also overnight trains) is VR Group.

Local transportation in Helsinki including Commuter Trains, Buses, Trams and the Metro is HSL. Tickets can be bought via the HSL-App or on many local vending machines.

If you are travelling to Turku from Helsinki Airport you may directly book a ticket via VR (changing in Pasila Station to the intercity train).

In Turku the public transport carrier is Föli.

Bus

Another option for intercity commute in Finland are long-distance buses.

A conclusive overview on different rides you can find on Matkahuolto

Taxis & Rental Cars

Taxis are generally available.

We recommend to try Ride sharing apps such as Uber or Bolt since they are usually less expensive.

E-Scooters (Voi, Lime, etc.) and rental bikes are also available in bigger Finnish cities. In Helsinki you can check here. For Turku you will find the options here.

All major international rental car companies are present in Finland. At Helsinki Airport you can find offices close to the Arrivals doors.

Accommodation

Hotels

UPDATE Dec'24 - We have agreed with a hotel in Turku on a competitive rate for our guests.

If you would like to stay in a different location, you can find hotels for instance via trivago or booking

Airbnb

There are many types of apartments and houses rented in all of Finland via Airbnb, you might even find a summer cottage.

Summer cottages

There's many different websites specifically designed for renting summer cottages, try for instance: Lomarengas, Cottage Finland or Nettimökki

Lapland

There's a lot of great hiking opportunities in Lapland and additionally, around this time you can experience the midnight sun, as the sun never sets. Check out the website of the Finnish national parks.

A relaxed way to travel to Lapland is taking a Night Train connection from Helsinki, Turku or Tampere to Rovaniemi or Kolari. We have taken this option and recommend to take the upper-deck cabin with an enclosed bathroom.

Other destinations

You can easily take ferries from Turku to Stockholm, or alternatively from Helsinki to Stockholm or Tallinn.

A cruise to Tallinn or Stockholm is a very common trip for Southern Finns. In addition to sightseeing and the famous buffets on the ships, it is a well-known sight that many travelers arrive at the Finnish ports with a trolley full of tax-free alcohol.

Tallinn

The Capital of Estonia is a cultural hub for the whole baltic region. The beautiful old town is absolutely worth the visit.

On Visit Tallinn you can find more information for a stay.
